Harnessing wind and solar power is important to our planet and continual development of alternative energy holds great long-term potential. However, a more immediate solution is natural gas, an abundant and affordable fuel that burns much cleaner than gasoline or other fossil fuels. Other parts of the world have been operating with natural gas-fueled vehicles for decades – an estimated 12 million cars, trucks and buses are powered with natural gas in Europe, Asia and South America. Expanding the usage of domestic natural gas on American highways will be a victory for the environment. Switching from gasoline powered cars to natural gas will result in a significant reduction in the emissions of CO2, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and other harmful gases. NATIONAL SECURITY

Twenty percent of the world’s oil supply – carried by an average of 15 massive oil tanker ships daily – passes through the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow 34-mile wide waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Arabian Sea. The supply chain is subject to naval blockades or rogue activity that can quickly constrict this strategic chokepoint. A disruption in the oil supply results in devastating blow to the United States economy. Nine out of ten economic recessions have been preceded by an oil supply disruption. Energy supply is a national security issue. American energy independence and a large increase in domestic drilling and production can neuter this threat. PEACE

The Middle East is a tinderbox of military tension and political instability. Its position as a major supplier of crude oil puts the entire world economy subject to sudden shocks and inflationary threats. An expansion of energy production in North American defangs the economic threats posed by Middle East conflicts. Reducing the dominance of imported fuels is vital to the national security of the United States. American energy independence furthers the cause of peace in our world. ECONOMIC STIMULUS

The most important trend in the world energy markets over the last decade is the emergence of advancements in the extraction of natural gas from shale formations in North America. Gas production from shale in the United States was virtually non-existent in 2000. However, by 2010 shale gas production reached 10 billion cubic feet per day and it is projected to quadruple by 2040. Innovations in drilling technologies, using horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing, has enabled producers to obtain gas and oil from shale deposits. The new drilling created new jobs. Job creation has already been significant in places such as the Eagle Ford Shale of South Texas where 3,000 wells are expected to be drilled next year. Nationwide, the shale drilling boom holds the potential to create more than two million jobs and bring in billions of dollars to Texas, North Dakota, Oklahoma and other states. FOREIGN OIL IMPORTS
One hundred years ago, the United States was the number one producer of oil. Our nation also became a major consumer of energy as industrialization advanced. By 1948, America became a net importer of oil. Currently, the United States’ top five foreign sources of oil are Canada, Mexico, Nigeria, Venezuela and Saudi Arabia. More than $400 billion worth of oil was imported to the United States in 2011. Our trade deficit, our economy and our national security are not sustainable at these levels. Energy independence is the answer. THE GOAL; ZERO FOREIGN OIL PERMITS

Boosted by exploration of domestic shale deposits, America’s natural gas supplies have reached a record high. America has 2,500 trillion cubic feet of potential natural gas resources. The large supply of natural gas has lowered prices for the commodity, but at the same time it has become clear that America has a huge long-term supply, capable of supplying an affordable stream for decades to come. The rapid emergence of shale gas -- a phenomenon termed “The Shale Gale” by IRS Cambridge Energy Research Associates – has given credibility to the goal of America slashing imported oil to almost nothing within the near future. DREAM WITH A DEADLINE: JULY 4TH, 2016
Geologists have long been aware of the rich deposits present in deep underground shale formations in the United States The ability to tap these resources, through hydraulic fracturing, has been available to the industry for decades, but innovations in technology made the practice an economically viable proposition a decade ago. Currently, shale accounts for about 30 percent of natural gas output, but that is expected to increase to 45 percent by 2035. Two advancements in petroleum engineering have been instrumental: hydraulic fracturing and horizontal drilling. Hydraulic fracturing is a drilling method of injecting a high-pressure mixture of water, chemicals and sand to release gas or oil from shale formations. Horizontal drilling allows drilling to be guided by a down-hole steerable motor that is controlled at the surface. EXPORT RATHER THAN IMPORT OIL

The surge in production has given credence to what once seemed impossible – that America could once again be a net exporter of energy, rather than an importer. Maturing expertise and techniques led to the rise in domestic production. The number of horizontal wells rose from 1,000 wells in 1990 to an impressive 20,000 wells in 2000. Hydraulic fracturing, or a “fracking” has become a familiar part of the American vernacular. The fracturing is a result of drillers pumping high-pressure liquids and sand into underground shale formations to allow natural gas and oil to flow. The fluids are 98 percent water and sand with 2 percent chemical additives. The fissures or fractures that are created in the high-pressure pumping process are “propped open” by the sands, which allows that natural gas and oil to pass into the well. CHANGE THE WORLD
