We have been taught that the first masjid built was in Madina.

In actuality, the first Masjid was built in modern-day Ethiopia, in the Kingdom of Axum, under the King named Najashi. It is known as Masjid an-Najāshī.

The refuge that black people gave Muslims in the early days of Islam is not highlighted or appreciated. Nor is this masjid revered or visited. It serves as a reminder of how, although we are all brothers and sisters in Islam, due to human nature, race and racial solidarity have always been powerful factors of human existence.
