After over 18 years of doing this work, here are a few things I wish every family knew before they started the college process.
I wish more families knew that test-optional does not mean test-irrelevant. A strong score still opens doors most students do not realize are closing without one.
I wish more families knew that summer is not the off-season. The students who feel calm in senior year are the ones who started in June, not September.
I wish more families knew that scholarships are not luck. They are a strategy — targeting the right schools, positioning finances correctly, and building a narrative that makes admissions officers take notice.
I wish more families knew that "safety schools" are not as safe as they once were. The flagship state school might be a very different application today.
I wish more families knew they did not have to figure this out alone.
