THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD:

THE ROLE AND CONCEPT OF THE LEVITE HAS UNDERGONE SIGNIFICANT TRANSITION BETWEEN THE OLD AND NEW TESTAMENTS, particularly regarding how their functions are interpreted in modern Pentecostal concept.

The New Testament Transition
the Old Testament, the Levites were a specific tribe of Levi set apart for the physical maintenance of the Tabernacle and Temple, as well as for musical and sacrificial assistance.

In the New Testament, the Levites now stands in the "priesthood" as redefined.
Of a truth, according to Hebrews 7, the Levitical priesthood was superseded by the priesthood of Jesus Christ, who follows the order of Melchizedek.

The New Testament introduces the "priesthood of all believers" 1 Peter 2:9. There is no longer a biological requirement being from the tribe of Levi to serve God.

The Five-Fold Ministry with
structural roles of the Levites temple service, teaching, music are largely replaced by the gifts mentioned in Ephesians 4:11. Apostles, Prophets, Evangelists, Pastors, and Teachers.
Now dwelling in the Levitical priesthood, the context of tithing and Church order, between the "office" and the "spirit" of the service hereby implies need be balanced appropriately.

Notice tithing and support,
wherein the principle of tithing originally be established for the support of the Levites, being carried over into the New Testament church. Wherein as the Levites had no inheritance in the land and were supported with the tithes of the other tribes, the pastor should be supported by the tithes of the congregation, for the indegents, widows orphans.

There exist parallels between the Levites and Church officers like the deacons or trustees.
Levites as the guardians of the house of God. In a modern setting, equate their responsibility for the "sanctity of the building" and the "assistance of the prophet/pastor" to the duties of deacons.

Hebrews 7:12: "For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law."
This acknowledged that the biological Levitical line was no longer the gatekeeper to God, wherein the pattern of their service consecration, separation from worldly pursuits, and being "called out" remained the blueprint for those in the ministry today.
In this view deposing that the Old Testament rituals performed by Levites were "shadows" of a spiritual unfurling reality found in Christ. Therefore, while we do not have "Levites" by DNA in the New Testament church, the ministry they performed is now still fulfilled spiritually through the Holy Spirit working in the ministry of the Church. The role and concept of the Levite has undergone a significant transition between the Old and New Testaments, particularly regarding how their functions are interpreted in modern Pentecostal concept.
