I first heard the term “body doubling” from a client about four years ago. At the time, I’d never heard it in graduate school, supervision, or research training.
Now it’s everywhere in ADHD spaces online.
What’s interesting is that the term itself seems to have come more from ADHD coaching and lived experience than from academic psychology.
And while the research specifically on “body doubling” is still limited, the broader psychological ideas connected to it really aren’t. Concepts like social facilitation, accountability, behavioral activation, and co-regulation have been studied for decades.
In both my clinical and personal experience, though, body doubling genuinely seems to help a lot of people with ADHD start tasks, stay focused, and feel less overwhelmed.
Sometimes psychology names something after the research catches up. Sometimes people discover what works first.
