What a day for the cohort!

EJCC interns explored Houston's Pleasantville community and surrounding areas with Bridgette Murray, Founder and Executive Director of ACTS.

The day included visits to climate and environmental monitoring projects, including an urban heat mitigation shade canopy playground, a community beautification project, air quality sensors, a TCEQ regulatory monitor, and the Clinton Monitoring Site operated by the City of Houston Health Department and TCEQ.

Students also heard presentations on a Texas A&M University and NOAA partnership project, toured a University of Texas at Austin mobile monitoring lab, visited a school garden at Holland Middle School, and observed the proposed data center site on Fidelity Road. The tour concluded with a look at the Houston Ship Channel and its connection to environmental and public health challenges facing nearby communities.

A data center boom is coming to Texas. See where they’re going. A Texas Tribune analysis identified at least 248 planned data center projects. Opponents fear the projects will spike Texans’ electric bills and make the grid less reliable. But industry representatives say they promise huge economic gains.
