Been seeing a lot of online bickering about training for competition vs training tactics the last few weeks.

Some perspective: Jeff Cooper, the "father of modern pistol shooting" was the 1st President of IPSC. Larry Vickers and Ken Hackathorn were among the founding members of IDPA... they were also in SFOD-D. If you don't know who any of these people are, do your Googles.

I don't know what folks are missing here. Grow up. This isn't an either or question. Do both. Shooting competition can allow you to build unconscious skill that can free mental bandwidth so that you can more efficiently apply the tactics that you should ALSO be training. While you're at it, go work out.

Find something important to argue about, like 9mm vs .40.
