I had a great time volunteering my time at the JTB-APO iLead Law & Leadership Conference where I engaged in negotiation exercises with high school students at Texas Southern University—Thurgood Marshall School of Law. It has always been a goal of mine to inspire and be a mentor for the next generation of lawyers!

President Biden recently issued an executive order on promoting the safe, responsible, and equitable development of AI. This sweeping order lays out a comprehensive approach for the US government to help realize AI's benefits while mitigating its risks across sectors.

Key elements include:

- Ensuring AI safety & security through new guidelines, standards, red team testing, and assessing risks like potential dual use. It tackles areas like cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, and CBRN threats.

- Unlocking innovation & competition by directing new investments, addressing IP issues, attracting talent, and preventing concentration. It aims to open opportunities, especially for small businesses.

- Supporting workers through analyzing labor impacts and establishing guardrails on workplace AI use. It calls for training and transparency.

- Advancing equity & civil rights by tackling algorithmic discrimination and addressing AI use in areas like criminal justice and government benefits.

- Protecting consumers & patients with new actions in sectors like healthcare, transportation, and education to encourage responsible AI adoption.

- Strengthening privacy through evaluating data practices, funding PET research, and limiting collection and use.

- Boosting government AI use by establishing a White House AI Council, appointing Chief AI Officers, and issuing guidance on AI management and risks.

- Asserting international leadership on AI norms, standards, and risks. It proposes strategies for safe global AI development.

This order lays out a whole-of-government approach to steer AI in a direction that promotes innovation and benefits society broadly, while protecting rights and mitigating downside risks. It's an important step in setting the direction for responsible AI policy.
