H. pylori infection tends to harm the lining of the stomach causing inflammation, and diseases such as ulcers, and gastritis. The most acute and harmful form of an H. pylori infection is stomach cancer. Hence, the timely treatment is necessary to stop the H. pylori infection from worsening into ulcers and stomach cancer. The reason for this infection is either contaminated foods and water containing the H. pylori bacteria, or from unclean utensils having it. The increase in use of clean water has reduced the cases of H. pylori infection.
H. pylori infection is very common and a large number of people suffer from it every year. This disease also occurs to children so the test for this infection is also done very frequently. Moreover, the results from this test are helpful in monitoring the effectiveness of the treatment.
This infection damages the protective layer over the lining of the stomach due to which acids present in the digestive system may come in direct contact with the stomach’s lining and damage it. Many tests are used to diagnose the H. pylori infection such as the stool test, endoscopy, and the breath test. However, the most common test for diagnosing an H. pylori infection is the breath test.
The H. pylori test is different from most other diagnostic tests in that it makes the diagnosis by measuring the amount of carbon dioxide contained in the breath of the person who exhales the air after drinking a citric juice containing an unharmful form of urea. Generally, most diagnostic tests use a blood, urine, DNA, saliva, or nasal secretions sample.
