The Pretty Dead Shop

Nothing like spending a nice afternoon collecting blackberries in my backyard, only to find this poor thing. I left him be, but it looks like it might be a young mockingbird, possibly caught up in a recent storm.

For those unfamiliar, all North American native birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. It's illegal to possess remains including bones, eggs, feathers, or even nests. Game birds have their own specific rules, and indigenous people have different rights with regards to native wildlife, but in general, it's safe to assume a bird is protected and to leave it alone.

I didn't vend at this weekend in San Antonio, but it sure looks like one of my girls was there! If anyone knows how she got there, I would love to know her story. I love to see my work 'in the wild,' but they don't usually make it to the expos without me!
