Researchers in Switzerland reportedly found that the Andes strain of may remain detectable in human semen for up to 71 months after infection.
According to the study, scientists monitored a man who contracted the virus in South America and discovered viral RNA in his semen nearly six years later, despite no traces being found in his blood, urine, or respiratory system.
Health experts say the Andes strain is unique because it’s the only known hantavirus capable of spreading from person to person.
Researchers also noted that while the virus’s genetic material was detected, scientists are still studying whether infectious transmission can actually occur that long after recovery.
The findings come as health officials continue monitoring the deadly hantavirus outbreak linked to the MV Hondius cruise ship.
