We read Philippians 1:6, “...He has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” And that's where we stop. That's not all he’s saying. If you'll notice, he says, “... just it is as it is right for me to think this of you all, ...”

Philippians 1:7 continues, “It is right for me to think that God will complete the work that He has begun.” And there's a “because.” “Because I have you in my heart in as much as both in my chains and in the defense and the confirmation of the gospel, you are partakers with me ...” “I have a conviction that God is going to finish what He started in you.”

“Because I look at your lives and I see that He's at work.” “I see that you're humble.” “I see that you're surrendered.” “I see that you're obedient.” “I see the work of God, the Holy Spirit.” “I see the power of God's Word in your lives.” “And I have every reason to believe that He who began a good work is going to finish it.”

Now we have to understand every person who believes in the Lord Jesus Christ is ultimately in heaven, going to be conformed completely to the image of Jesus Christ. There's no question about that. The question is, how much will we be conformed here and now?

Is your mindset shaping your life more than you realize?

We often overlook how powerful our thoughts are—especially during tough times. Paul’s letter to the Philippians reveals that our joy and peace depend heavily on how we control our mind. He highlights four mindsets critical for believers: the single mind on Christ, the servant mind of sacrifice, the spiritual mind of focus, and the confident mind.

The crazy part? Even Paul, chained in prison, stays joyful, confident, and impactful because his mind is anchored in Christ’s victory. Life’s disappointments, even persecution—these are opportunities to advance the gospel, not derail it.

What mindset are you allowing to lead your life right now?
Remember, your thoughts today could be the catalyst for spiritual breakthrough tomorrow.
Worth thinking about.

Anyone want to get into a competition with the Apostle Paul? “But what things were gained to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed, I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith.”

What we have in verses one through six are six cardinal achievements — six things that Paul did as an unbeliever. Six things that the world would look at in amazement. Six things that would cause people in his presence to show him tremendous respect and tremendous regard. And he says they were all worthless. They were all things that you can have no confidence in.

You know, we tend to often judge people based on their achievements, accomplishments, possessions, status, whatever. This passage tells us that those things mean absolutely nothing at all. When eternity is in view. And so Paul says, all of his confidence as he tells us now in verses 7 to 11, is in the spiritual realm. “But what things were gained to me, and I want you to notice the interplay of the words “gain” and “loss.”

“What things were gained to me, these I counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I suffered the loss of all things, and I count them but rubbish.”

Most of you probably know that Paul used the word for “rubbish” that really should not be translated “rubbish.” It's a four letter Greek word that starts with “S.” The form that we find in this passage: “skoobala.” But it was a particularly offensive word in the time of the Apostle Paul. Nice people didn't use this word. Paul uses it here to say, this is what all human accomplishment amounts to. So we'll be nice and say “human excrement.”

“I count all things excrement that I may gain Christ be found in him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God by faith.”

I want you to focus on that. No confidence in the flesh. Faith in Christ. No one comes to Christ until they first realize that they have absolutely nothing to offer for their salvation. Salvation is always by grace through faith alone in Christ alone, and there is no other way. We don't bring 1%. We don't bring 3%. We are completely helpless, hopeless and useless.

What we gain for eternity does two things. Number one, we gain and it lasts forever. That's pretty good. But there's a better reason. It brings honor and glory to the Lord Jesus Christ. The Apostle Paul desired to live a life that expressed his gratitude for the life saving, life changing, eternity changing gospel of Jesus Christ.

Philippians Conference

Philippians is a book of the mind. It's a book of how you think. It's a book of what you think. Let me give you a real quick outline of the book of Philippians:
Chapter one talks about “The Single Mind.” It talks about being single-minded — the ability of focus, the ability to concentrate. Which again, unfortunately, we're losing in this day and age.

Chapter two talks about “The Servant Mind” — the mind of Christ — whether we are reflecting Him, whether we are “being conformed to His image, ”or whether we are not. By the way, when Paul says, “let this mind be in you, which is also in Christ,” the word is actually not “mind.” The word is “phroneō.” It's a present imperative and it says, “Let this way of thinking be in you, which was also in Christ.” And so that's what we're going to try to build over our time in Philippians.

Chapter three, we have “The Spiritual Mind.” How do we think spiritually? How do we process things when the Spirit of God is in control? That's the spiritual mind.

And then Chapter four is something that people really need today “The Secure Mind.” You know, we're living in perilous times. There are things going on behind the scenes. There are things going on under the surface that the average American has absolutely no clue about. There are events that are taking place that can be earth-shaking, life-shaking and life-changing. But the great thing is this book never changes. And the truth that this book conveys to us never changes. And therefore, the more our life is grounded and founded in this book, the more unshakable we're going to be in the time in which we live.
