KILAUEA VOLCANO JUNE 2023: Towards the last days of the June eruption this side cone was stealing the show with the most lava activity right up to the final hours before going dormant once again.

Kilauea Volcano Eruption June 2023 shot from Volcano House during dinner with Nikon d500 + 600mm zoom lens.

For night time video a mile away...I'm not mad at this clip.

I think for the other people just viewing with the naked eye would agree that this is far and away much more clear and detailed than they experienced from the exact same spot.

It was a bit breezy so there's some camera shake.

The tripod is a medium travel model so not ideal for such a big lens.....but a huuuuge improvement over my previous utralight tripod I used last year here.

This was from the first night of the eruption that started just before 5 am. I was up that morning replying to client text at 4:30 am completely unaware that Kilauea had begun a dramatic eruption.

We all (everyone that lives on the Island of Hawaii) knew it was going to happen soon, all the signs - elevated gas emmissions, doubling of earthquake swarms and tilt meters showing inflation at the summit - they were all saying it was about to happen....but it was like that for days, maybe a week or more.

So nobody really know exactly when the eruption will break.

There was about an hour warning before the June eruption.

And fyi - Kilauea is showing signs of unrest again. Same pattern but not as much gas emission so scientist are more skeptical about the"emminent" thing.

I'm hoping it's soon.

I'm much more prepared to shoot and document the event this time.

Not every photo needs to be magazine cover worthy. Documenting some aspect of the journey is worthy coverage.
