The legend of Kekūhaupi`o, the senior advisor to King Kamehameha I. As a young man Kekūhaupi`o was trained in ways of fighting and military strategy. For his `ailolo (graduation and accompanying rituals) Kekūhaupi`o was tasked to kill a Niuhi (large Tiger Shark). Kekūhaupi`o went out on a double-hulled canoe with a party of warriors and in deep waters scattered pork guts as bait. A large Niuhi came towards the boat and Kekūhaupi`o slipped into the water and hung onto the shark using his ihe pokole (dagger) to overcome the Niuhi. Kekūhaupi`o offered one of the shark’s eyes to Akua and the other he ate giving him the eyes and power to transform into Niuhi during battle.
*This mural has been planned for months and coincidentally on the plane I watched in the first episode of .of.war do the same thing as Kekūhaupi`o and new it was meant to be! CHEEEE
