Prepare for Hurricane Season by Reviewing Your Flood Insurance or Buying Flood Insurance if you have none.

The 2017 hurricane season was one of the most devastating and costly on record, and forecasters predict that these severe storms will continue this year. Approximately 80 percent of households impacted by hurricanes in 2017 did not have flood insurance. One of the most important steps home and business owners can take to recover faster and more fully after a disaster is to buy flood insurance. If you already have flood insurance, congratulations! Now is a good time to review your policy to make sure your coverage and deductibles meet your needs.

Most homeowners and renters insurance policies do not cover flooding. Just one inch of water in an average sized home can cause more than $25,000 in damage.

Flooding can happen anywhere, not just in high risk areas. 98% of counties in the U.S. have experienced a flood. More than 20 percent of flood insurance claims are from properties outside of high risk areas. During Hurricane Harvey, nearly half of all flood claims in the Houston area came from homes outside of high-risk flood areas.

Now is the time to buy. Flood insurance policies typically take 30 days to go into effect.
