If you're living with a disability and wondering about Medicare, here's what matters most:
You can get Medicare before age 65 if you've received Social Security disability benefits for 24 months. That's right - you don't have to wait until retirement age.
Your Medicare covers hospital stays, doctor visits, and prescription drugs just like everyone else's.
But here's something many people miss: Medicare doesn't cover everything. You'll still need to budget for copays, deductibles, and services like long-term care.
The good news? Extra programs exist to help with costs if your income is limited. Medicare Savings Programs and Extra Help can reduce or eliminate many expenses.
Start planning early. Contact Social Security about three months before your 25th month of disability benefits to ensure smooth enrollment.
And remember - you have choices in how you receive your Medicare benefits, including Original Medicare or Medicare Advantage plans.
