The acoustic pharyngometer and acoustic rhinometer are not interchangeable tools. They answer two different questions.

The pharyngometer measures the pharyngeal airway volume and the narrowest point through the throat. That’s useful when you’re screening for OSA risk, selecting oral-appliance cases, and dialing in appliance position with more confidence.

The rhinometer measures the nasal airway, cavity volume, and minimal cross-sectional area. That helps you identify whether nasal obstruction may be part of the problem, including septal deviation, turbinate hypertrophy, or valve collapse.

And that part matters more than many dentists realize.

When nasal resistance is high, it can work against oral-appliance outcomes and make CPAP harder to tolerate. If you’re only looking at the throat, you’re missing a variable that can change the whole treatment conversation.
