I “lava” this! 💕🌋💕
Healthcare on the Big Island
If you’re thinking about relocating here, let’s talk about something that doesn’t get discussed enough… healthcare.
I have a wonderful GP here who is responsive, kind, and truly cares. I’m very grateful for that.
But there are realities you need to understand.
I recently had cervical spine surgery and had to travel to Oʻahu because we do not currently have neurosurgeons on the Big Island. That meant coordinating flights, hotel, and transportation through insurance.
And even when you do everything right, things can still get missed.
My return flight had me seated away from my husband after surgery. My hotel reservation wasn’t even in the system until I called to confirm. After surgery, I spent hours on the phone sorting out medication issues before a weekend.
Everything eventually got resolved. But it required constant follow up.
Also, emotional support supervisor (Mylo Kitty) was present for all phone calls 😻
As far as Hilo Medical Center, I’ve had positive experiences with ER visits, imaging, and general care. The people have been kind and professional.
But the system here requires more involvement from you.
If you’re moving here, think beyond just the home. Consider access to specialized care, possible travel, and how comfortable you are navigating those logistics.
Advocate for yourself. Ask questions. Confirm everything. Follow up. Then follow up again.
It’s an incredible place to live. Just come with your eyes wide open.
