Veteran Wayne Best from the American Legion gave an American flag folding demonstration and instruction to Cub Scout troop 782 in Highlands Ranch.

There were four Cub Scouts participating for their badges, and 18 people total present besides Wayne Best.
Wayne taught the Cub Scouts about the meaning of the stars and stripes on the American flag. They learned that the Cantin is the blue upper left on the flag. Cantin means ‘blue upper left’, which tells us the proper way to fly the American flag. The width is called the fly and the side is the hoist!

After answering questions, the Cub Scouts paired up with American flags to practice folding. Winston Otto paired up with Cub Scout friend to fold a traditional cotton American flag. Another pair of Cub scouts folded a bright polyester American flag.

Veteran Wayne Best told us that is better to get a cotton American flag because when the flag is worn out, the American Legion can properly burn the flag. Though synthetic nylon gives a bright color, they are toxic to burn and the fire department needs to be involved when doing so. Nylon flags have become an issue for the American Legion who collects old flags to properly dispose of them as a community service.

The flag demonstration and instruction was held at an American Legion Son of the American Legion and Auxiliary member’s home, Amber and Jonathan Farquhar, in Highlands Ranch on Lark Sparrow St. This was a rewarding experience seeing the roots of American patriotism grow among the Cub Scout Troop 782.

May God bless America!

A Memorial Day Poem by C.W. Johnson

We walked among the crosses
Where our fallen soldiers lay.
And listened to the bugle
As TAPS began to play.

The Chaplin led a prayer
We stood with heads bowed low.
And I thought of fallen comrades
I had known so long ago.

They came from every city
Across this fertile land.
That we might live in freedom.
They lie here 'neath the sand.

I felt a little guilty
My sacrifice was small.
I only lost a little time
But these men lost their all.

Now the services are over
For this Memorial Day.
To the names upon these crosses
I just want to say,

Thanks for what you've given
No one could ask for more.
May you rest with God in heaven
From now through evermore
