North Carolina minimum limit changes
North Carolina minimum limit changes will go into effect on July 1, 2025. This is a result of recent legislative changes detailed in S.L. 2023-133 (former S.B. 452) and S.L. 2024-29 (former S.B. 319).
Minimum limit increase for all new business and renewal policies effective on or after July 1, 2025
New bodily injury liability limits $50,000/$100,000
New property damage limits $50,000
Combined uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist coverage is now mandatory and coverage has been broadened
These changes will result in an increase to uninsured/underinsured motorist rates
***Additional changes to inexperienced operator surcharge and chargeability period were also included in the legislation, for drivers newly licensed on or after July 1, 2025. These include, expanding the surcharge period for inexperienced operators to eight years and expanding the surcharge period for certain SDIP point assignments to five years. In practice, these will not be applicable until on or after July 1, 2028.***
