Here is a little RV history for you:

1. The First “Motor Home” – 1915
In 1915, a group of engineers built one of the earliest motorhomes, called the “Gypsy Van.” It was basically a converted bus with a kitchen, bathroom, and sleeping quarters—pretty wild for its time. It even had a library and a pull-out porch! The owners, a wealthy family from New York, traveled the eastern U.S. and wrote about their adventures in The New York Times.

2. The Tin Can Tourists – 1920s–30s
These folks were some of the original RVers. They got their name from the canned food they lived on and the tin-can lanterns they hung outside their camps. Traveling in homemade trailers and early RVs, they’d gather in Florida and other warm spots each winter. They had their own rituals, symbols, and even a secret handshake!

3. Charles Lindbergh’s Road Trips – 1930s
After his famous solo flight across the Atlantic, Charles Lindbergh and his wife, Anne, traveled across the U.S. in a custom trailer to avoid public attention and enjoy some peace. They used their time on the road to explore remote areas, study wildlife, and write. Anne described those RV trips as some of the most intimate and peaceful times in their marriage.
