Footprints are easy to see but what do they tell you? Information as simple as the things contained in these examples when examined against the baseline of a quarry’s gait footfall sequence through the O.C.I.S.E. algorithm (Observation,Classification and Interpretation of Spoor Evidence) will give you human behavior and thought processes. This analysis allows a master tracker to go beyond this and into the ability to predict their future behaviors and decision making processes of the quarry.

Perhaps a woodland pursuit tactics course is in order. Dealing with all things from initial contact whether traffic stops or warrant ex*****on, site exploitation to tracking team operations, command and control,perimeter containment with adjustments and pursuit tactics with or without K9. We shall see.

SCOUT TRACKING TEAM MOVEMENT TECHNIQUES:

FLEX-I

This is the second of two main formations of the Scout Tracking Team (STT). This formation is used in sparsely vegetated terrain and generally during daylight hours. Distances between team members is increased or decreased as the terrain and vegetation allows.
This formation allows the most flexibility for tracker-observers and tracker-security to maneuver with the terrain while still maintaining their areas of responsibility.

The second photo represents the Rhodesian Y which is similar in application in some aspects. Reflected are a 6 and a 4 man team respectively.

SCOUT TRACKING TEAM MOVEMENT TECHNIQUES:
The CMDR chooses movement formations in accordance with an evaluation of the principles of METT-T. Each formation has strengths and weaknesses and the ST team must be texible to mold formations based on terrain and situations.

FORMATIONS:
If you have adequate manpower for a team or if you are man heavy these formations should be used. A base ST team is six men. If you have less than this the team is considered light. If you have more men you are considered a drag team or heavy. The mission will always dictate the necessity of manpower. If you have five men you can accomplish the heavy formations.

S-FILE:
This is the first of two main formations of the ST team. The distance between team members should be about 5 to 10 feet. This allows each member to help the other team member in front of or behind him from being entangled in vegetation. As the terrain opens with more visibility the team leader adjusts the formation accordingly. This formation is used during day-light hours in Thick vegetation and for all limited visibility conditions.
Each member can warn the other team members physically or orally of the approaching quarry without a delay or unnecessary noise or movement. If the ST's do not take the time to avoid breaking the vegetation, they can be easily tracked. The team moves slowly and easily and takes listening and rest breaks often.

From here we move to the FLEX-I etc. dependent upon terrain and proximity to quarry and numerous additional aspects of pursuit.
