Someone broke into one of our field trucks and stole a laptop.

We filed a police report. The officer asked for the serial number and device details. We had them, because we track every device we manage.

About a year later, we got a call. The laptop had shown up in a raid at a pawn shop. And because we had the information on file, they returned it to us.

We honestly never expected to see it again.

Knowing what you have sounds basic. But it's what gives you options when things go sideways.
