Jefferson Health is offering a new screening tool called Mammo+Heart. Its 2 tests in 1.

Its an AI-powered screening tool that uses a mammogram to also screen for cardiovascular disease risk by detecting breast arterial calcification (BAC). BAC is a finding on a mammogram that indicates a potential increased risk for heart disease. The tool helps identify this finding more often than a radiologist alone and can provide additional information for a patient's overall health assessment, often as an optional add-on to a standard mammogram.

How it works
AI analysis: The software uses artificial intelligence to analyze mammogram images for the presence of breast arterial calcification (BAC).

BAC detection: These calcifications appear as white, linear deposits on the arteries within the breast tissue.

Cardiovascular risk: Studies have shown that the presence of BAC is associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, such as heart attack and stroke.

Enhanced screening: Mammo+Heart helps radiologists find BAC more accurately and efficiently, providing an additional layer of health screening during a routine mammogram.

What it means for patients
Risk assessment: The results can provide patients with insight into their potential cardiovascular risk.

Referral: A finding from Mammo+Heart may prompt a discussion with your doctor or a referral for further heart health screening by a cardiologist.

Optional service: It is often offered as an optional service that may have an additional cost, as it might not be covered by insurance. Jefferson charged $120 extra for the heart exam.

Important to know
Not a diagnostic test: Mammo+Heart is a screening tool, not a diagnostic one. A finding does not confirm heart disease but indicates an increased risk.

Complementary to mammogram: It is a supplement to your breast cancer screening mammogram, not a replacement for it.

Ongoing development: The technology is still evolving, and more research is being done to standardize its use and develop clear guidelines for follow-up care.

The irony of today....
I'm doing an event at the healthfair at Main Line Health Rehab. This was the very place 40 years ago that made me want to become a nurse. My mom was her brothers caregiver all those years ago. I spent most of my childhood in and out of hospitals all over the region witnessing healthcare variations and bedside nursing at its finest.
I always wanted to be a doctor until coming to this rehab. I witnessed the doctors come in and out, shouting orders and remaining unsympathetic to our needs. It was the nurses here, however that gave me and my family direct attention. "That's what I want to do, mom. I want to take care of the families. Nurses spend more time with them," I remember saying.
Today I walked inside. Nostalgic. I can't explain it but the inside of a hospital just feels like home to me. It's a feeling a familiarity and security.
Nursing is forever in my heart and always a part of who I am in all things I do.
