Two swarm traps and a free forming swarm outside today! I’m glad someone is enjoying the pollen surplus 😅

If anyone needed a sign that spring is around the corner, here’s a busy bee with pollen on her legs! They’re loving this warm weather as much as we are!

Today I dropped off the last jar of honey until we harvest again this spring (hopefully May)!

First, a big thanks to everyone who has purchased honey! It has helped us pay for baseball, soccer, gymnastics and other things that have helped our kids grow and learn.

Second, we could use YOUR help! We lost two hives through the fall and winter. We have two very strong hives currently and have confidence that they will give us a good amount of honey this spring. We have enough hive boxes for around 8 hives. Swarm season is coming up and if you see a swarm of bees on your property and would like them moved, let us know and I might be able to send the bee man out to rescue them! I am putting a photo below of a swarm that we found last spring. We always seem to have an exciting Easter of trying to capture a swarm or two!

Thank you all again! We will have honey available for you before you know it.

We ended up with just under 9 gallons! It’s quite a bit lower than what we had expected/hoped for as we found issues with a couple of the hives when we got into them. Hoping for another harvest in a few months before cooler weather sets in. The quart jars were filled first and the honey in those is darker. The honey changes color based on what pollen is brought in by the bees throughout the year. With this being our first harvest in 7+ months, that super seems to have had a much different pollen than the clover you get in the spring! Different colors will typically give different flavors but I promise that they are all delicious!

Step Five: Run the frames through the centrifuge with the help of the littles. The centrifuge spins the uncapped honey fast enough to spin it out of the comb. It collects at the bottom and there is a spout that drains into a sanitized bucket. From here, we will fill jars from the bucket!
