If you’re packing your own kitchen knives, here’s how to do it without turning moving day into a first-aid situation:

• Wrap each large knife on its own.
Dish towel, bubble wrap, packing paper, whatever you’ve got. Just don’t toss them in together.

• Cover the blade completely.
If you can still see the edge, it’s not covered enough.

• Point all blades in the same direction, downward is best.
It makes unpacking a whole lot safer.

• Make a little sleeve with cardboard.
Fold it over the blade and tape it shut. No slicing through boxes (or hands).

• Group wrapped knives with tape or a rubber band.
Keep things tight and organized.

• Pack them in a well-padded box and label it clearly.
Big bold letters: HANDLE WITH CARE. No surprises later.
