I’m proud to join hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers at the National Puerto Rican Day Parade, celebrating the rich culture, history, and contributions of the Puerto Rican community. The energy, pride, and spirit on display were truly inspiring. Nassau County is stronger because of the many Puerto Rican families who call it home, and I am honored to celebrate alongside them. ¡Que viva Puerto Rico! 🇵🇷🇺🇸

🚨BREAKING: NYPD Assistant Chief Aaron Edwards has been awarded the department's Medal for Valor for leaping a barricade to chase down an ISIS-inspired bomber outside Gracie Mansion in March without knowing the homemade device had failed to detonate.
"It was really important that we got a chance to get recognized by the mayor, by the city, by the department — but not for me, really — for all the cops that were working at Gracie that day," Edwards said after receiving the honor Monday.

One Backpack Could Provide Shelter Power And Hope Daily
Innovation is often associated with faster phones, smarter computers, and advanced technology. But sometimes, the most meaningful inventions are the ones designed to solve real human challenges. A German startup has developed a unique backpack that can transform into an insulated bed equipped with solar panels, offering a portable shelter solution for people experiencing homelessness.
The concept is simple yet powerful. During the day, the product functions as a backpack that can carry personal belongings. At night, it unfolds into a protected sleeping space designed to provide warmth and comfort. The built-in solar panels can help generate electricity for charging small devices, giving users access to communication tools that are often essential for finding support services, jobs, or emergency assistance.
Around the world, homelessness remains a major social issue affecting millions of people. Access to safe shelter, reliable power, and secure storage can make a significant difference in daily life. While no single invention can solve homelessness on its own, creative solutions like this show how technology can be used to address practical needs and improve quality of life for vulnerable communities.
Many people think of technology as something that only benefits businesses or consumers with the latest gadgets. This project offers a different perspective. It demonstrates how innovation can be directed toward compassion, dignity, and real-world impact. Sometimes the most important breakthroughs are not about convenience or entertainment but about helping people navigate difficult circumstances with greater safety and independence.

A group of 119 Democratic lawmakers has formally urged congressional leadership to reject the newly formed “Sharia-Free America Caucus” and oppose several bills they say unfairly target American Muslims and raise constitutional concerns. In a letter sent to House and Senate leaders on 8 June, the lawmakers argued that proposals such as the Preserving a Sharia-Free America Act, the No Shari’a Act, and the Protecting Puppies from Sharia Act address no identifiable gap in US law and are rooted in longstanding anti-Muslim narratives rather than legitimate policy needs.
The letter was led by James E. Clyburn, Chris Van Hollen, André Carson, Rosa DeLauro, Hank Johnson, Ro Khanna and Jerry Nadler. Signatories noted that federal and state laws already govern civil and criminal matters and pointed to the 2013 federal appeals court ruling in Awad v. Ziriax, which struck down Oklahoma’s anti-Sharia amendment as unconstitutional under the First Amendment.
The lawmakers stated that American Muslims serve in every sector of society and are entitled to the same constitutional protections as all other Americans. The letter compared Islamic religious guidance to Catholic Canon Law and Jewish Halakha, arguing that legislation singling out one faith tradition risks normalizing religious discrimination. The coalition called on congressional leaders to reaffirm religious liberty, reject efforts rooted in anti-Muslim bias, and refrain from advancing legislation that targets a specific religious community.
