I Wonder What These Geese Are Thinking 🦢

My morning walk took me to Butler Falls Golf Course in Hanover, IN, today. I like to switch up my paths, and if no one is golfing, which was oddly the case this morning, I'll take the cart path around the lake.

As I rounded the bend, I came upon a flock of geese soaking in the morning sun along the banks of that beautiful lake water. Most of them were resting comfortably on the tee box, at least until I got a little too close for their liking.

It got me thinking. I wonder what these geese are actually thinking about.

Maybe something like, "What a wonderful morning," or "Should I stay up here or slide into the water?" or "I wonder what there is to eat in that lake today?"

I can probably tell you what they're not thinking. They're not thinking, "I wonder what information I need to collect for the zoning appeals board," or "How much impact will AI have on us in the future?" or "Which political party actually has my best interests at heart?" No, I can say with full confidence that none of that is rolling around in those walnut-sized brains of theirs.

And that got me wondering something bigger.

Has our larger brain really enriched our lives the way we think it has? With the world getting smaller and a wealth of knowledge sitting right at our fingertips, has our quality of life truly increased? Does more stuff bring us more happiness? Sometimes I wonder if our intelligence has quietly made us prisoners in our own world, robbing us of community, simplicity, and the value of relationships over property.

Then again, I came back home to write these thoughts on Facebook, work on our website, design some custom fence panels, pay a few bills, and drink my Walmart coffee brewed in my Keurig.

So clearly, I don't have the answers. Just a lot of questions. 😊
