Much of this data predates the new, more infectious variant, which means we will see rapid growth of these numbers. Reopening schools at this moment threatens the safety of Hackensack’s students and staff, as well as their families and our community.
Nearly 600 COVID cases linked to 121 N.J. school outbreaks. All 21 counties included in latest report. The latest report from New Jersey health officials includes 10 additional districts with in-school outbreaks of the coronavirus that have led to 40 new cases.

Reopening during a viral surge doesn’t only endanger students and staff in Hackensack, but strains our hospitals and first responders. We will contribute to more suffering on our current course.
New Jersey hospitals brace for another COVID surge that may last until mid-February Modeling shows 4,500 to 6,000 daily hospitalizations by February, and the state would face a shortage of hospital staff.

Wayne is another district mentioned as a comparable in justifying Hackensack’s reopening plan, and they have been forced remote for a full month by continued, uncontrolled spread of COVID-19. It is important to notice trends, too: nearly 1/3 of positive cases among students and staff occurred in the last month, despite being off for nearly half of it due to holiday break.
'Our situation is not good': Wayne students to learn from home until at least Feb. 11 Wayne reported 3,945 positive cases of COVID-19, attributing 198 deaths to the disease, since March of last year.
