We met Drax after a referral from our friends at Hurst Animal Clinic. Drax came to DVSC for a consultation on Brachycephalic Upper Airway Syndrome (BUAS)—a condition that affects breathing in breeds such as English Bulldogs, Mastiffs, and Pugs (to name a few). These breeds all have the appearance of a smushed in face, caused by variations of the skull bones, and can result in abnormalities of the respiratory system. This may lead to difficulty breathing, heat sensitivity, exercise intolerance, GI issues, and more.

We’re thrilled to share that Drax underwent surgery and is now on the path to a better quality of life!

Here’s what Drax’s dad had to say about his experience:
“From the moment we walked in, everyone was incredibly kind and supportive. The entire team made me and my dog feel at ease. They were quick to address any questions I had during recovery. I highly recommend DVSC for any pet surgery needs!”

We’re grateful for the opportunity to help Drax live his best life and are so glad to hear that his dad had a positive experience.

Unfortunately, 1 in 3 pets will go missing in their lifetime and only 1 in 10 are found (AAHA). July is National Lost Pet Prevention Month and serves as a reminder to put strategies in place to keep your pet safe. Check out our best tips to prevent your pet from going missing.

If your pet does go missing, file a lost animal report with your local police department, post on community social media pages (such as Facebook or Nextdoor), check neighbors’ yards or video doorbell footage, scout local parks, and call animal shelters in your area.

During the warm summer months, brachycephalic dogs such as Pugs, Frenchies and English Bulldogs are at increased risk of breathing difficulties and heat stroke.

Be sure to watch for:
• Heavy panting
• Glazed eyes, rapid pulse
• Dark red tongue
• Excessive drooling
• Staggering or weakness
• Blue or gray tongue or gums
• Vomitng

If you suspect your pup might be suffering from heat stroke, please contact your closest emergency vet immediately.
