Butterfly and flatback earrings are the most common types of studs we see folks wearing. In the past couple years we’ve seen an influx of low quality plated flatbacks that don’t fit and are more problematic than a higher quality butterfly back earring. They’re often sold online as quality and it’s fricken hard to tell what’s good.

The biggest factors that make a stud work well for a fresh or healing piercing are material, surface finish, and fit.

The rest comes down to design which is where we will always be on team (internally tapped) flatback, especially for piercings that are still healing or will be worn to sleep even in a healed piercing.

Practically speaking we totally get why folks love a butterfly back. The front-installing style means you can see the piercing easier to swap jewelry out and they’re readily available everywhere from the corner bodega to Fifth Avenue.
