In 3rd-century BC Rome, men favored carefully groomed beards maintained by tonsors (barbers) who worked in tonstrinae (barber shops). The barbers’ tools included bronze novaculae (razors) sharpened on whet stones, basic tweezers, and beeswax depilatories.

While barbers and hairstylists work in a closely related industry, in modern grooming there is a difference between the two. The primary instrument of a barber is the electric hair clipper; for the hair stylist, it is scissors. However, both will use the other tool as a secondary item.

Our modern word “barber” is derived from the Anglo-French, "barbour," "someone who grooms beards." The word first entered our language in the 14th century, when it was used to describe those who washed, cut, trimmed, and shaped beards and hair.
