Unlike a QWERTY keyboard, the stenotype keyboard only has 22 keys. The difference here is that with a stenograph machine the words can be individually reduced to one letter or a combination of letters, focusing on the sound of the word rather than the spelling, which simplifies the process considerably.

The stenotype is specialized for shorthand use, and instead of a traditional QWERTY keyboard, multiple keys are pressed, or chorded, to spell out words and phrases in one motion.
