Hanging Lake is one of the most iconic places to visit in Colorado. At 3.1 miles out and back this hike can be a bit strenuous especially if you are not used to the altitude. It isn’t terrible and there are plenty of rest spots along the route. Just give yourself plenty of time as there are some steep areas up the hill. The lake itself is magical. There are wonderful views from every angle and the pictures here will last you a lifetime! Make sure you go a little further up to Spouting Rock - a beautiful waterfall to see. I highly recommend going to see Hanging Lake at different times of the year as it completely changes with the seasons. Permits need to obtained in advance and you should allow plenty of time for this in the summer time especially. Winter in Grand Juction Colorado is the perfect time to explore McInnis Canyon National Conservation Area near Fruita. One of the top hikes to do is in Devils Canyon. This hike gives you a relatively good workout, and you are rewarded with beautiful vistas throughout. One of the highlights on this hike is an old cowboy cabin full of old relics. This cabin was built by cowboys who used to run cattle in the area and marks the halfway point of the 7-mile hike. It's a fun place to explore, but please do not take any of the items that are present in the cabin. The unique topography of the area is something you will treasure and remember for a very long time.
