As the Director of The Integrated Life, I believe part of my role in social services is not only supporting individuals one-on-one, but also paying attention to how systems impact the people we serve.
This video walks through something I see up close every day: how navigating paperwork, documentation, transportation, time off work, and small fees can become major barriers when someone is living with very little margin. What feels simple to some of us can be incredibly complicated for others.
In our work, we help people replace birth certificates. We help them secure IDs. We sit with them while they call offices, wait on hold, and try to untangle bureaucratic knots. We see how housing instability, name changes, lost documents, trauma, poverty, and caregiving responsibilities all intersect with “just getting your paperwork in order.”
So when conversations about voter ID and “personal responsibility” come up, I can’t separate them from what I witness in real life.
This isn’t about partisanship for me. It’s about systems design and equity. Civic participation matters. And when access to participation depends on having spare time, spare cash, and stable infrastructure, that impacts the very communities we serve.
As a social worker — and as a director — I believe it is critical to speak thoughtfully about how policy interacts with vulnerability. That’s part of ethical practice. That’s part of leadership.
I welcome respectful dialogue. My goal isn’t outrage. It’s understanding.
