What does being fully present look like?
We have a new granddaughter that was born last week. She is beautiful, healthy and wonderful in every way! I am having difficulty staying present when I can be with her and forget everything else. Life has its interruptions, some are great and some not so. It’s easy to spend your days thinking or planning everything besides what you really need to be doing. It makes being present unavailable.
Being present isn't simply paying attention to what's happening around us. It's freeing ourselves from what keeps pulling us away from the present. Some of those pulls are exciting events and some are events from the past that just keep replaying. Every judgment we hold, every resentment we replay, and every hurt we refuse to release keeps part of our heart living somewhere other than here. We may physically be in the room, but mentally we're having yesterday's conversation or worrying about tomorrow's problems or playing with a new grandbaby. Presence is impossible when our attention is trapped in the past.
How do you know when you are not present?
Your body will send you signals. It is always communicating with you. Your body does not lie; it is your mind that does all the lying.
There may be moments when you have lost or forgotten something because you are focusing on something other than the present. When a painful experience is pulling you away it may show up as tightness in your chest during a stressful conversation, pain and stiffness after sitting too long, tension in your neck and shoulders, headaches, or stomach aches. These are often the body's way of letting you know that you've taken offense, or that you are harboring anger, judgment, hurt, or resentment.
The body isn't asking us to focus on the pain; it's asking us to pay attention to what the pain is pointing toward. The same goes for when you have forgotten things, stop, breathe, ground and focus on the moment.
Through all the yoga, meditation, breathing, and calming daily practices you faithfully do—which are all wonderful and beneficial—if the pain continues, perhaps your body is inviting you to wake up to something deeper.
When I notice pain in my body, I ask myself, "Who or what am I upset with? What am I judging? What have I not forgiven?"
I listen for the answer.
Then I begin my forgiveness work.
In my experience, forgiveness has been one of the most powerful ways to release the pain that comes from carrying unfinished business from the past into the present.
Forgiveness doesn't change the past.
It changes our relationship with the past.
It quiets the mental chatter.
It softens judgment.
It allows us to let go of resentment.
And in doing so, it brings us back to the only place healing can happen—the present moment.
Sounds too simple?
It really can be that simple.
If you'd like to experience this for yourself, learn the forgiveness process we teach in our online Forgiveness Course or join us for one of our in-person classes.
Perhaps the greatest gift of forgiveness isn't simply that it heals old wounds.
Perhaps its greatest gift is that it returns us to the present—the only place where we can truly experience peace, hear God's voice, love the people in front of us, and allow healing to take place.
Healing begins the moment we become fully present. And forgiveness is what brings us there.
Love, Joyce and Steve Brinton
