If you haven't noticed it yet, Instagram is changing the aspect ratio of the preview thumbnails in the grid display. They are doing this because they claim most content that is uploaded now fits a vertical format, including photos and videos. From one perspective this makes sense because Instagram has always been a platform intended for use on mobile devices. However, long-time Instagram users are complaining that this ruins mosaics that they've created using the grid (which represents a lot of hard work to customize their content); it also makes all square posts appear improperly cropped on the sides in preview, though the posts still appear normal in the single column feed. Some critics are even saying Instagram is working too hard to be like TikTok. We'll see if Instagram keeps going in this direction or if they respond to these complaints by turning it back (which will probably depend on how many complaints they get). If they keep going in this direction it's unclear what the new recommended dimensions should be for Instagram images. In our own test the new previews have a 3:4 aspect ratio, but Instagram could be beta testing other ratios. Some sources claim that it's a 4:5 ratio or 9:16. The ratio for their reels has always been 9:16. So where the standard dimensions used to be 1080x1080, the new dimensions would be 1080x1436 or 812x1080 for a 3:4 aspect ratio. This will certainly change the work of influencers on Instagram. It could also change the offerings of Marketing Agencies who create and publish posts for clients. A single square image can be used on Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and X (though it is cropped in X). Using a vertical image for all of those could negatively affect the experience, so an Agency could elect to charge more for the service and create a separate vertical image for Instagram, if the client wants to be on Instagram at all. 🤷‍♂️
