This is a desert spiny lizard, and like many lizard species, it has what we refer to as a “third eye.” It’s not an eye in the way people normally think of vision, but a light-sensitive organ on the top of the head that can detect changes in brightness and movement above them.

They use it as a kind of early warning system. The front eyes handle hunting and spotting prey, while that third eye helps them sense threats from above, especially predatory birds. If a shadow passes over them, they can react quickly before the threat even fully comes into view.

These lizards also play an important role in the desert ecosystem because they’re scorpion eaters. Keeping non-target species like this safe is part of responsible pest control. When we treat properties, the goal isn’t to disrupt the balance of the environment, it’s to remove the dangerous pests while preserving the beneficial ones that naturally help keep populations under control.

After the initial spray, we don’t stop there. We follow up with granules, which are basically a water-activated version of our liquid treatment. While the liquid covers about a 3-foot perimeter around the home, the granules take over in the landscape areas beyond that zone.

We apply them evenly across soil, rock, and planting areas to make sure there are no gaps in coverage. Once activated by water, they break down and release product into the soil, targeting pests where they live and move.

It’s one of those steps that fills in the blanks. Liquid handles the structure, granules handle the yard. Together, they create a more complete barrier that keeps pests from working their way back in.
