If it’s too hot for you to walk on the pavement, it’s too hot for them⬇️
-Pavement and asphalt heat up significantly faster than the air, which often reaches 125-140 degrees F during the day. This kind of heat can SEVERELY blister and burn your pet’s paws in as little as 60 seconds.
-Plan your pet’s walks. Early in the morning and late at night. Seek out grass and utilize dog booties.

❌🚙Do not leave your pet in the car
-it is never safe to leave your pet in a parked car, even for just a few minutes. Dogs can develop life threatening heat stroke in less than 10 minutes on a mild summer day
-Dogs cool themselves by panting, which becomes ineffective in a hot, humid, enclosed space like a car. The greenhouse effect traps heat inside, making cracked windows or shaded parking ineffective

💧 🐶Fresh water and shade
-If possible, keep your pet indoors in air conditioned spaces during this heat.
-Ensure your pet has 24/7 access to fresh water and shade (outside and indoors)

Know the signs of heat stroke⬇️
Early Warning Signs:
-Excessive panting
-Thick, sticky drooling
-Bright red tongue and mucous membranes
-Hot skin to the touch
-Increased heart rate
-Restlessness, hyperactivity, difficulty maintaining balance
-Dry nose, sunken eyes, and tiredness
Moderate to severe symptoms:
-Confusion and disorientation
-Muscle spasms
-Vomiting /or diarrhea
-Collapse
-Fainting
-Seizures
-Loss of consciousness
-Pale, white, or blue gums

At the first sign of heat stroke, move the dog to a shaded and cool area immediately. Offer small sips of cool water (Do NOT force). Wet the belly, groin, and neck with a damp towel. Monitor temperature and call an emergency vet immediately. Heat stroke is life threatening and can also result in very serious complications.

As we get closer to the 4th of July, here is your annual reminder of pet safety tips! 🇺🇸

Safe and Sound inside🏡🐱: Before the fireworks begin, set up a “safe space” for your pet to ride out the holiday. This space should have minimal to no windows, and be filled with comfort items (familiar blankets, toys, treats)

Fireworks and Toxic Hazards🎆 🚫: Keep your pets away from both lit and unlit fireworks. Fireworks can cause physical burns, and also cause toxicity if ingested. Keep human food and drink contained and ensure trash can lids are secure

Identification and Microchipping📈📋: Pets may panic and attempt escape during fireworks. Please ensure your pet has an updated identification tag and microchip information is up-to-date. Have a recent picture of your pet handy in the event they get lost

Behavior and Medication🐕‍🦺💊: If your pet is prone to anxiety, call your vet NOW to fill anxiety medications or inquire about anxiety reducing products/practices

What to do if your pet gets out on the 4th⬇️
✅Stay Calm. Don’t Chase.
If your pet is in flight mode, chasing or yelling can push them further away into danger. Move slowly and gently.
✅Share Details Widely
Utilize local lost and found social media groups to post your pet’s photo and information. Any key details like time, date, location, and distinguishing features should be included
✅Contact local shelters and rescues
If your pet is found, shelter staff can scan for a microchip and contact you (keep information up-to-date!). If your pet has not been taken to a shelter yet, calling and informing the staff is proactive as they will have your information on hand. Be mindful that this holiday is one of the busiest of the year for shelters

🗓️ From July 4th-July 6th, animal shelters across the U.S see a 30-60% increase in lost pets entering their facilities. This makes July 4th the single most common day of the year for lost pets in the country. The percentage of pets that return home after becoming lost on July 4th remains under 20%.
