We ask that you consider donating June 18th! “For a small percentage of the population, finding someone else with the same blood type can be as difficult as looking for a needle in a haystack. Patients who require frequent blood transfusions as part of their treatment, like those with sickle cell disease or thalassemia, can need close blood type matches to prevent these patients from developing complications from their transfusion therapy. The best blood type match for patients with rare blood types often comes from donors of the same race or similar ethnicity” (redcrossblood.org).

“More than 100,000 people in the United States have sickle cell disease.
Sickle cell disease affects 1 out of every 365 Black or African American births.
People with sickle cell disease may need as many as 100 units of blood each year.
Your blood donations could help alleviate the symptoms of someone living with sickle cell disease, or even help save their life” (redcrossblood.org).

The in-person portion of the Mental Health First Aid training was a success.
Attendees in today’s interactive class continued to learn how "to identify, understand and respond to mental health and substance use challenges"(mentalhealthfirstaid.org).
The learning continues over the next two weeks as attendees complete additional online requirements to become certified.
As always, if you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health emergency, contact the 24/7/365 DMH Statewide Crisis Response dispatcher at 833-364-2274 (tel:833-364-2274), utilize the Crisis Textline (Text HOPE4SC to 741741), or DIAL 988 (https://namisc.org/contact/). “On January 21, 2013, Hadiya Pendleton marched in President Obama’s second inaugural parade. One week later, Hadiya was shot and killed on a playground in Chicago. Soon after this tragedy, Hadiya’s friends commemorated her life by wearing orange, the color hunters wear in the woods to protect themselves and others.
Wear Orange honors Hadiya and the nearly 130 people shot and killed every day in the United States, along with the hundreds more who are wounded and the countless others whose lives have been changed by gun violence” (https://wearorange.org).
