We at Flood Rescue Academy would like to offer our condolences to the family and co-workers of FireFighter / Paramedic Alicia Monahan.
SAR DEATH: Alicia Monahan was reportedly teaching swiftwater (SW) SAR at the Nantahala River area In North Carolina (NC) USA and died in a "catastrophic accident". Details are forthcoming. Our sister in SAR Alicia was a SW instructor and a full time Firefighter-Paramedic with Chesterfield Fire Dept / IAFF Local 2803 in Virginia (VA) USA, having served for 11 years and she was reportedly off duty when at the training. She was also a member the Virginia SAR Dog Association (VSRDA) and her reported current K9 in training is Zoe, border collie, training in Wilderness Search. We are monitoring updates for details and memorials. Alicia reportedly has two sons and fiance, who is also in SAR.

Travis County STAR Flight Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Headquarters Blackcomb Helicopters came and trained at the facility this week. We love having other agencies from around the nation and world come and train at Flood Rescue Academy. They not only learn new techniques but they also teach us a new technique or two to pass on to other departments that come and train in the future.

I wanted to reach out to all of you and wish you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all of us at Flood Rescue Academy. I hope that this email finds you all safe and at home with your family and friends during this time.
This past September I retired from Williamson County EMS after 25 years. I sat idle for about five days then took on a new position as Special Operations Captain for another agency in Texas. This will be sending me to more training and experience that I will be bringing back to the Academy. So always something new!!
We are gearing up for a new and exciting year at the Academy with new curriculum updates to both our water and ground class components. Most of this is based on the feedback from students such as yourselves over the past two years. So I thank you all for that.
In addition to our current Technician and Advanced Curriculum we will be adding a two day "team building" class for the civilian as well as first responder side of things this coming year. This will be a good refresher course for those that have had training at the academy in the past. We will continue to offer one day refresher courses and on site Ground SAR and Awareness level training at your department as well.
I really do enjoy this time of year but I am ready to get back in the water and get back to work. The weather this December has been crazy to say the least and I think it's going to be a busy spring and summer for us all. So stay safe out there and STAY OUT OF THE WATER. 🙂
