Planning a flight this summer? Your ears might feel the trip before you do. ✈️
When an airplane ascends and descends, the surrounding air pressure changes more quickly than the pressure inside your ears can adapt. This imbalance can cause popping, a feeling of fullness, or even the sharp pain commonly known as "airplane ear."
A few simple actions can help:
• Swallow, yawn, or chew gum during takeoff and landing to help your ears equalize. 🍬
• Try the gentle "pinch and blow" method: pinch your nose, close your mouth, and softly blow to open the ear tubes.
• Stay hydrated and skip the in-flight nap during descent, since you adjust better while awake. 💧
• Flying with allergies or a head cold can make pressure changes even tougher. If your ears stay blocked, muffled, or painful long after you land, it may be time for a closer look.
At Georgetown ENT, our caring team helps you travel comfortably and protect your hearing all season long.
