The temperature inside a vehicle can rise 19 degrees in just 10 minutes.
A child's body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than an adult.
Every Heatstroke death in a vehicle is preventable.
Every year an average of 39 children across the US die from heat exposure in vehicles.
Since 1998, 32 children have died in NC from a being left in a hot vehicle.
Last year, North Carolina ranked 6th in the nation for heatstroke deaths in children under the age of 14.
Heatstroke deaths of children, as a result of being alone in a vehicle, occur for one of three reasons:
54% - child was forgotten by parent or caregiver.
26% - child was playing in an unattended vehicle and became trapped.
19% - child was intentionally left by an adult.
Never leave children or pets unattended and alone in a vehicle.

Congratulations to Captain Phillip Little and Captain Robert Beasley!
Garner Fire Rescue is proud to recognize two outstanding leaders as they begin new chapters in their careers.
Please join us in congratulating Lieutenant Phillip Little on his promotion to Captain, effective June 29, 2026. As part of this transition, Captain Little has been reassigned from Ladder 1 (C-Shift) to Ladder 1 (A-Shift). This promotion reflects his commitment to professional development, our organization, and the Garner community. We look forward to his continued leadership in this new role.
We would also like to congratulate Captain Robert Beasley on his appointment as Training Officer. This appointment represents an important leadership opportunity, with significant responsibility for developing and preparing the members of Garner Fire-Rescue. Captain Beasley brings a wealth of operational experience, a passion for professional development, and a commitment to excellence that will help strengthen our training program and support the continued growth of our agency.
Please join us in congratulating Captain Little on his well-deserved promotion and Captain Beasley on his new assignment. We are grateful for their leadership and look forward to the positive impact they will continue to make for our organization and the community we proudly serve.

As this week goes on and the weekend approaches, the temps with continue to climb!
Staying hydrated is your first line of defense against severe health issues like heat exhaustion and heatstroke. When working or exercising in hot weather, drink about 8 ounces of cool water every 15 to 20 minutes instead of waiting until you are thirsty.
Don't forget about our furry friends and other pets! Keep them plenty of cool, fresh water and PLEASE do not leave children and/or pets in vehicles for even a couple of minutes. Temperatures in vehicles can quickly exceed 120 degrees in just a few minutes!
