Sleep has been a hot topic in our clinic the last few weeks, so let's talk about it!
Sleep involves far more than simply turning off the lights and going to bed at the end of the day. The body’s ability to fall asleep, stay asleep, and wake feeling refreshed depends on a complex interaction between the nervous system, stress response, nutrient status, and overall health.
One area of growing interest is the role of phospholipids, including phosphatidylserine and phosphatidylcholine. These compounds are important structural components of cell membranes and play a role in cellular communication throughout the body, including the nervous system.
Phosphatidylserine has been studied for its relationship to stress physiology and cortisol regulation. Cortisol is a hormone that naturally follows a daily rhythm, rising in the morning and declining in the evening. When this rhythm becomes disrupted, some individuals may experience difficulty winding down at night or achieving restorative sleep.
Magnesium is another nutrient frequently discussed in relation to sleep quality. While magnesium is involved in hundreds of biochemical processes throughout the body, different forms of magnesium may have different applications. Magnesium glycinate is often utilized for its calming properties, while magnesium L-threonate has been studied for its ability to cross the blood-brain barrier and support neurological function.
Although no single nutrient is a solution for every sleep concern, evaluating factors such as stress, nutrition, lifestyle habits, and overall health can provide valuable insight into why sleep disturbances may occur.
At Root Function Health, we take a personalized approach to understanding the factors that may be influencing sleep, recovery, and overall wellness. Through individualized recommendations and targeted nutritional support when appropriate, our goal is to help patients better understand the many systems involved in healthy sleep.

Magnesium-L-threonate improves sleep quality and daytime functioning in adults with self-reported sleep problems: A randomized controlled trial - PubMed This showed MgT improved sleep quality, especially deep/REM sleep stages, improved mood, energy, alertness, and daily activity and productivity. These are consistent with how MgT works in neuron cells and animal models, suggesting broader positive impacts on overall brain health.
