A tornado warning went out last night for Southern Maryland, where our farm is. We saw it and didn't think much of it. There are so many warnings that never turn into anything, and we figured this would be another one. It wasn't on my mind at all when I went to bed.
Then at 7:45 this morning we got a text from our neighbor. Our driveway was completely blocked. Several trees, some of them more than five feet across, had come down across it overnight. We were an hour away with no way to get there, no idea if our chickens were okay, no idea what shape the farmhouse was in.
And then our neighbors did something I still can't get over. They brought their own tractors and chainsaws down to our place and cleared those enormous trees out of the driveway themselves. Nobody asked them to. They did it out of the goodness of their hearts.
The community down in Southern Maryland is something I don't quite have words for. It is easy to lose a little faith in people. A few neighbors with chainsaws and big hearts handed mine right back, and reminded me that people are good and they show up for each other when it counts.
I am so grateful for the neighbors we have at the farm, and I am praying that everyone across Southern Maryland came through this safe.
