As someone who would be the first openly gay Marylander in Congress, I stand on the shoulders of organizations like HRC who have paved the way for countless LGBTQ+ leaders. In Congress, I look forward to working with them to advance an agenda that achieves true equality for all Marylanders.

The right to vote and the integrity of free and fair elections is at the heart of American democracy. Anyone who seeks to subvert the will of voters and overturn an election by force must be held fully accountable in accordance with our nation’s laws. Even if that person is a former President of the United States. Today’s indictment is the first step of what will be a long, thorough, objective, and apolitical process to determine the truth — and ultimately a jury of citizens will decide the outcome of the case against the former President.

It’s clear, from far before this indictment, that the former President and his allies will do anything for power. Even if that means inciting an armed insurrection, casting doubt in our elections, or undermining the right to vote. We must be vigilant and stand united in the defense of our democratic institutions.

The future of our country depends on us holding those who violated our constitution accountable, moving forward while leaving behind the politics of chaos and extremism, and coming together to work on solving the real problems facing communities from Oakland to Gaithersburg.
