U.S. Senate Passes the FASTER Act (S.3451)

1.5 million Americans are living with an allergy to sesame. At the same time, until today, sesame was not included in the list of the so-called "main allergens". This week the United States Senate unanimously passed the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research (FASTER) Act (S. 3451). This bill, like the bill that passed through the U.S. House of Representatives on November 17, would add sesame as the ninth major allergen. Because the Senate bill is slightly different from the House bill, it will need to go back to the House for a vote before it moves to the president’s desk for a signature.
Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA) which FDA approved, are eight major foods or food groups--milk, eggs, fish, Crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, and soybeans-- account for 90 percent of food allergies. Adding sesame seeds to this list we are one step closer to making a law – improving the lives of the 1.5 million Americans who suffer from this food allergy.
