Fireworks Safety 07/04/26

With today being the Fourth of July, many people will be setting off fireworks this evening. Here’s a few tips to remember.

1) Every year more than 31,000 fires are started and over 13,000 injuries occur nationwide. This resulted in 15 deaths in 2025.
2) Burns made up 38% of injuries, followed by hands, fingers, head, face, ears.
3) Sparklers are more dangerous than you think. Sparklers burn at 2,000 degrees, hot enough to melt some metals, resulting in severe burns in children. Consider using safer alternatives, such as glow sticks, confetti poppers or colored streamers.
4) Never allow young children to handle any fireworks, and older children should be under adult supervision.
5) Wear protective safety glasses.
6) Never use fireworks while impaired by alcohol or drugs.
7) Never hold lighted fireworks in your hands.
8) Only light one device at a time.
9) Never ignite devices in a container of any kind, especially glass.
10) Do not try to re-light or handle malfunctioning (dud) fireworks. These should be doused or soaked in water before discarding.
11) Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby to fully extinguish errant fireworks or in case of fire.
12) Be mindful of your neighbors and their proximity to your activities.
13) Be mindful of neighborhood dogs and cats. Keep pets indoors at home in a sheltered, quiet area. Don’t take them to parades or fireworks displays.

Never use illegal fireworks. Better yet, sit back and relax in a lawn chair and leave it to the professionals.
