After a long pause, we recently welcomed back members from the RSI Hygienist Study Group! Dr. Clem shared updates on the relationship between periodontal disease and diabetes, certain medications, inflammation, cardiovascular health, interleukins, tumor necrosis factors, and other health related issues 🤓

We have some exciting news to share with everyone! Each year, The American Academy of Periodontology and its 8,000 international members choose a special honoree to be presented with The Gold Medal Award; the highest honor presented by the Academy. This year Dr. Clem has been selected for his outstanding contributions to the profession, his journal publications, and presentations furthering the field of periodontology and dental implant surgery. He is one of the very few private practice clinicians to receive this honor. For over 30 years, Dr. Clem has served the Orange County community, building a cutting-edge practice with his partner, Dr. Nelson Yen, and assembling an outstanding clinical treatment team. In addition, we are one of the very few practices that have been granted participation in FDA clinical trials for medical devices and pharmaceuticals. Drs. Clem and Yen remain committed to clinical excellence and strive to contribute to the advancement of the profession. Incorporating evidence-based technologies is key to this commitment. One patient recently summed up our practice by remarking, "You guys are the Mayo Clinic of dentistry!" We look forward to continuing to serve the dental needs of our community.

The results of our recently completed Biolase (Er:YsGG laser) study were published in the July issue of Journal of Periodontology. This trial compared surgical use of Biolase versus minimally invasive surgical technique (MIST) for infrabony defects. This is considered a landmark study being the first randomized, blinded, and controlled clinical trial published using lasers in managing periodontal defects. Dr. Clem and Dr. Yen continue to bring evidence-based therapies to clinical use.
