Why are we sharing all of this information about HPR? As ADAPT states in their post: "๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฐ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ: High-quality social connection dramatically reduces risks of depression, anxiety, substance use, violence, and su***de, while significantly increasing resilience, academic success, and long-term well-being. It literally helps people live longer, and in health-promoting relationships, it helps cultivate protective beliefs in youth."

๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ฒ๐ป๐ฐ๐ฒ ๐ถ๐ ๐ฐ๐น๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ: High-quality social connection dramatically reduces risks of depression, anxiety, substance use, violence, and su***de, while significantly increasing resilience, academic success, and long-term well-being. This week in the ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: ๐๐ฃ๐ฅ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป! campaign, we explore the second strategy in an HPR ๐ธ๐ข๐บ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ: ๐๐ฎ๐ฐ๐ถ๐น๐ถ๐๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฐ๐ผ๐ป๐ป๐ฒ๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป. We encourage you to seize the opportunity to assess and sharpen your ability to engage 16 facilitators of connection (see image below) in your moments with youth.
Casual check-ins, quick instructions, or distracted conversations do not build the protective beliefs youth need to thrive. Meaningful connection (the kind that helps youth feel seen, valued, understood, and supported) is a ๐ฉ๐ข๐ณ๐ฅ skill, not a ๐ด๐ฐ๐ง๐ต one. It takes consistent work, but the dividends for youth well-being (and our own!) are profoundly worth it.
1. Which of these facilitators of connection do you already bring naturally into your relationships with youth?
2. Which do you immediately recognize as needing some attention?
3. Pick the one that stands out to you the most and commit to developing it more intentionally this week.
More details on this week's content along with self-assessments for trusted adults and youth will come out in Wednesdayโs email.

In our most recent podcast, we sat down with Bret Bement from Play Favorites. In addition to taking us through his story of a traumatic brain injury and the dark time in his life when he considered su***de, Bret talked about his intent to make Play Favorites a third space, where people can gather and connect. Check out this HPR moment! Rikki has been one of our favorite speakers at CADCA conferences for a long time. She always has some great insights!

What type of environment are you providing for the kids in your life?
What is the environment communicating to them, day after day, about their worth, their potential, and their abilities?
In week 5 of the ๐๐ป๐ด๐ฎ๐ด๐ฒ ๐๐ถ๐๐ต ๐๐ป๐๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป: ๐๐ฃ๐ฅ ๐ถ๐ป ๐๐ฐ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป! campaign we explore the first of the four HPR ๐ธ๐ข๐บ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ strategies, which is foundational to the others: ๐๐ฟ๐ฒ๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฒ๐ป๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ผ๐ป๐บ๐ฒ๐ป๐.
Through the physical spaces we design, the emotional climate we set, and the cultural environment (shared values, norms, and standards) we intentionally shape, trusted adults influence youth development in profound, often unspoken ways (including role modeling!).
1. Is it evident that youth matter in the physical environment?
2. Is the emotional tone I create when Iโm in this space one of warmth, safety, & encouragement?
3. Does the culture I am shaping promote respect, voice, growth, support, and consistency?
More detailed guidance on how you can create a positive environment in your HPR ๐ธ๐ข๐บ ๐ฐ๐ง ๐ฃ๐ฆ๐ช๐ฏ๐จ will be released in Wednesdayโs campaign email along with a self-assessment tool for trusted adults and youth activity.
